Meet Alvin

We would like you to meet our groundhog. This is Altamont Alvin.  He is the groundhog here at Altamont who is going to help us predict the weather for the next 6 weeks.

Legend has it that if the groundhog sees his shadow on February 2nd, we are in for more storms before winter is over.  If he does not, spring should be just around the corner.

Stay tuned for more information.  We will let you know if Alvin sees his shadow here in Altamont or not!

Alvin is also going to take turns going home with each of us and we will be keeping a journal.  This will help us become better writers and will be lots of fun!

Meet The Teams

US, Altamont Elementary
Our school is located in Altamont, Utah, a small town in northeastern Utah.
We are a rural school. I just lost a student this week, so we are presently
at 28 students in our class! I participated in Project Groundhog for 2 years but it was several years ago. I am excited to participate again! We have had snow this week. It has been cold but mild compared to our normal winters. It is hard to predict which way the rest of the winter will go!  Our groundhog is
Altamont Alvin!

Hello from Hawthorne Elementary School,
My name is Justin Spencer and I am one of the three students who will be sending the weather information each day. The weather team is made up of Markus, Jakob and myself. Just a little bit about our school. Hawthorne is located in Ladner, B.C. Ladner is a small town outside of Vancouver. It is about 45 minutes by car to downtown. Ladner is a nice little town with schools, shopping centre and a great Leisure Centre. We have 9 elementary schools and 1 high school.
Our class is a Grade 3/4 split. We have 15 Grade 3 students and 9 Grade 4 students. All the Grade 4's were together last year in Grade 3 with our teacher Mrs. Harris. We look forward to learning more about all of you taking part in Project Groundhog. We voted and our groundhog is called
Hawthorne Harry.

Hi everyone,
I was looking at the various things we need to do with this project
and I tried to download the weather chart. I was not able to open
it. Have any of you tried and were you successful? I wonder what is
wrong? How is the weather where you are? If has been very cold weather for
southern California so far this week. It is supposed to warm up by
the end of the week. The weathermen are telling us to expect 80
degrees by Friday or Saturday. Unbelievable for this time of year.
Have a great rest of the week.
Norma Goddard

Our Lady of the Way
Hello everyone! I am a grade 3/4 teacher at a rural school in Northwestern Ontario. I have 15 students in my class this year. It has been a VERY cold winter so far and I am really hoping for an early spring! I was involved in Project Groundhog last year and am excited to participate again! Welcome to everyone!

Prairiedale Elementary: Vanderhoof BC Canada
Hello everyone! This is my 4th or 5th year participating in the groundhog
project. We are a small school of just 85 students k-3. My grade 3 class
has 20 students who are very eager! We live in the geographical center of
British Columbia, Canada! Our town of Vanderhoof boasts a population of
5000! We are so hoping the groundhog does not see his shadow as we are growing
tired of the winter!! ;) We named our groundhog
Schniggle Fritz!! Don't ask!!!!!

Wickliffe Progressive Community School
I am from Ohio. We are close to Ohio State University. We participated last year. I have 16 students who are going to participate. There is a big snow storm predicted for our area. This is concerning because I am currently in Boston Mass. at a science conference. I hope I make it home Wednesday!!
